“Tarantino is another influence,” Mitton continues. “He covered the ’60s, and he has these incredibly colorful and poignant characters. The aesthetic is very simple, and we remember all these scenes and characters. Other films can be a little muddy. Where Deathloop It’s all about remembering, I thought it was a good support. To advance in the story, you have to remember and you have to transfer your memories from episode to episode. So having that simplicity was important. We didn’t want a complex game, visually speaking, with a lot going on.”
Isles of Solitude
DeathloopThe island is a strange mixture of modern architecture, Scottish stone castles – which will look familiar to Dunwell visitors from the previous Arkane game. insultingA harsh, treeless landscape. On top of the Faroe Islands, which Arkan mentioned in previews, Mitton told me they wanted to capture the isolated landscapes of northern Scotland (shown in this) short film Scottish cyclist legend Danny MacAskill). “At the same time, we were looking at other places with cold environments. Mostly around the poles,” Mitton explains. “Obviously I can’t just buy airline tickets, so I’ll go to Google Earth and use Street View to get around.”
Mitton was marked by several places, such as the Falkland Islands near Argentina. “The structure of the mountains there is amazing. They are very desolate, treeless, and not particularly attractive. There were also places in northern Russia – petrol extraction stations are very desolate and you need a whole week to travel there. There are even some cities built in the 1960s there. They almost look like something from half life 2. It has all these shops and casinos, because when you go there, it’s for a whole year, and planes and boats don’t just come and go.”
Arkan was keen to capture the idea of a very isolated but relatively built-up settlement. In addition to having its share of villainous bunkers, concrete bunkers, and secret labs, Blackreef has its own entertainment complex, rooftop bar, and even a lavish renovated castle that comes with a ballroom and comedy club. He’s also crawling with immortals, characters who are keen to make the most of a recurring time loop by throwing a perpetual party fueled by hallucinations.
“It’s like a movie the thing“The events are set apart from the rest of the world, and you just focus on what’s going on there,” Mitton says. “We wanted to put things where no one would want to go on vacation, and then build our science fiction and narrative on top of that.”
In terms of architecture, Deathloop It builds on what Arkane started with insulting. “Our goal with Dunwall was to make it very cold and dark,” says Mitton. “With DeathloopWe wanted to compare that with the 60s and the colors. Color began to appear on the walls, interiors, and NPCs on the island. It is a kind of manifestation of their inner life; They want to live eternal life and have this eternal party.
“Every day it’s going to be a party, you can kill people or die, and that doesn’t matter. It’s all very nice, and we wanted that to be clear. So we painted entire buildings, like some of the pubs you see in England, which can be quite graphic. There’s also the film High Plains DrifterWith Clint Eastwood. There is a scene in which he comes to protect a village, and everything in the village is painted red, in the middle of the desert. It’s really beautiful, and we thought, OK, let’s continue like this! “
